Daliyi - The Renovation of an Historical Town

This community renovation proposal, which won the Gold Award in the Taichung City Design Competition, was completed in September 2014 for an old town named Daliyi. In order to rejuvenate the community and attract tourists, I conducted field research about the history, wars, notable characters, attractions, and cultural activities, and analysed the potential reasons why tourists do not come to Daliyi Old Street (an historic neighbourhood) anymore. I proposed activities combining local folk culture, such as the Matsu Pilgrimage in 18 villages, drum dance, a sightseeing route, and roleplaying opportunities with Qing dynasty costumes on Daliyi Old Street. I used the history and local speciality food—pickled mustard greens—as inspiration to design four commodity categories (i.e. rubber stamps, cards, speciality foods, and cultural souvenirs).
